Manchester United miss out on Pedro to Chelsea

Chelsea will sign Pedro from Barcelona on Wednesday in a £21.1million deal. Clubs up and down the Premier League still look primed to do plenty of business before the end of the month with Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea all set to spend big over the next few weeks. Barcelona's Pedro looked all set to be wearing red this coming season but Jose Mourinho has swooped in at the 11th hour to hijack the deal and take him to Stamford Bridge instead. Our man David McDonnell believes that leaves United - and Louis van Gaal - in something of a transfer quandary before the window closes. And what about Ed Woodward - Pedro now joins a not insignificant list of transfer targets to have slipped through his fingers over the last three years. Pedro was understood to be unimpressed by United's pursuit after failing to be convinced that they really wanted him to join. Manchester City and Chelsea have both been in contact with Barcelona for a number of weeks, however, the Premier League champions moved quickly after a weekend in which Jose Mourinho made it clear he needed improvements to his squad. The Blues will pay £19million up front to the Catalan giants, an improvement on the £17m offered by United. The World Cup winner, who will team up with friend Cesc Fabregas at Stamford Bridge, is expected to have a medical on Wednesday afternoon with Chelsea's Spanish doctor Paco Biosca overseeing events.
