Taylor Swift Breaks Down On Stage, Talks Mom Cancer

Taylor Swift Performs 'Ronan' Live, Breaks Down, & Talks About Mom's Cancer Battle On Stage

Taylor Swift fans at the 1989 World Tour stop in Arizona on Monday night (Aug. 17) may not have gotten a guest performance from a big name like Lorde or Fifth Harmony, but they did get another special surprise: a rare performance of the song "Ronan." In the midst of her mother's own battle with cancer, the 25-year-old pop star sang the StandUp2Cancer single in honor of the toddler named in the track and his family.

Ronan's mother, Maya Thompson, was in attendance at the show, sparking Swift's performance. Leading up to the heartbreaking track (on which Thompson shares writing credits), Swift opened up about her personal connection to cancer.

"I've had cancer hit really close to me in my family," Swift said, fighting back tears. "And... so because Maya is right there, I'd like for you to give her a round of applause."
